Steve Outing at Poynter Online has posted a comprehensive overview of the different layers of citizen journalism -- "from dipping a toe into the waters of participatory journalism to embracing citizen reporting with your organization's full involvement."
Just from scanning the subtopics in Outing's post, "The 11 Layers of Citizen Journalism," it appears he has done a great job of covering this topic. Once I've had a chance to read through and absorb, I'll post more-detailed comments.
UPDATE: "The 11 Layers" is a thorough examination of the different flavors of citizen journalism and newsroom transparency in practice today, so I won't add much here.
It's quite telling that the #1 item on a list that starts "slow and build(s) toward the most radical visions" is not available on most news sites. Article comments are fundamental to reader interactivity, a point I've hammered on.
Outing says, "Two-way conversation is an imperative characteristic of most citizen journalism, yet it appears to remain threatening to many people in the journalism and publishing professions."
