Mix one small town, a well-attended parade and a camera -- or several -- and you've got the formula for a successful web package. WestportNow.com published 140 photos from seven contributors of Memorial Day events in the Connecticut.
That's what was used out of the 250 photos that 20 people submitted, publisher Gordon Joseloff says on the web site, one of the early citizen journalism community sites. The photo gallery was indicating more than 4,000 total views when I checked it out.
With BeniciaNews.com, we had a guaranteed hit with readers whenever we covered Benicia's Fourth of July Parade (2001, 2002). That photo to the left isn't from the Rose Parade. That's downtown Benicia hours before the start of the parade in 2004, which I know because the digital camera inserts a time stamp in the photo information. Readers don't care about great prose for coverage of their community events, but they'll eat up photo galleries.
